One of the most important steps to prepare for a tummy tuck, breast augmentation or other plastic surgery is going over the list of medications and supplements that you currently take with your plastic surgeon. While many people remember to discuss over-the-counter or prescription medications with their plastic surgeons, herbal supplements and vitamins may be overlooked or not discussed at all.
Here’s why it’s crucial to list both pharmaceuticals and natural supplements, plus a list of 10+ common herbal supplements and vitamins to avoid before and after getting plastic surgery.
Always Include Herbal Supplements in Your List of Medications
People often assume that because they don’t require a prescription and are labeled as “natural,” herbal supplements and vitamins do not need to be included in their lists of medications prior to surgery. However, some natural supplements can affect surgical outcomes just like over-the-counter or prescription medications, so you’ll want to discuss which to avoid before your surgery.
Which Herbal Supplements to Avoid before Plastic Surgery
Like pharmaceutical medications, various herbs and vitamins can cause bleeding problems, blood pressure issues, anesthetic effects and unwanted drug interactions. Some of the most common supplements that you will be asked to quit taking several weeks before the date of your plastic surgery include:
- Ginkgo biloba
- Ginger
- Ginseng
- Fish oil/omega-3 fatty acids
- Dong quai
- Feverfew
- John’s wort
- Ephedra
- Kava
- Echinacea
- Goldenseal
- Valerian root
Keep in mind that this is by no means an exhaustive list. Always provide your full list of medications and supplements, including any multivitamins you take, prior to your procedure so your plastic surgeon can take a look and let you know which ones to stop taking before surgery.
Note that some foods can cause similar effects as some of the herbs listed above, so your plastic surgeon may recommend that you avoid eating things like fish, tomatoes and very salty foods for a few days before your procedure.
How Long after Surgery Should You Avoid Certain Supplements?
After your plastic surgery procedure, you’ll need to continue avoiding certain supplements and medications as your body begins to heal. The amount of time you’ll need to forego these supplements will depend on the specific supplement, your medical history and other factors. Generally speaking, most herbal supplements are safe to begin taking again anywhere from a few days to two weeks after getting plastic surgery. Always check with your plastic surgeon before taking any supplement or medication after your procedure, however.
Are There Any Supplements I Should Take after Plastic Surgery?
Conversely, a few notable herbal supplements may be beneficial to start taking after plastic surgery to help reduce bruising and swelling. Arnica montana, bromelain and vitamin C are among the most popular supplements believed to aid in wound healing and minimize side effects like bruising. However, you should always check with your plastic surgeon before taking any supplements directly after your procedure, including these ones.
