Hair loss is a common issue that targets both men and women, and while our scalps may be the most jeopardized area, thinning eyebrows have emerged as another confidence killer, especially in the era of thick arches.
Eyebrow thinning can happen for a number of reasons: aging, hormonal changes after childbirth or during menopause, thyroid problems, skin conditions, diet, alopecia, cancer treatment, or even as a result of overtweezing!
So apart from being a nuisance, thinning eyebrows could be a sign of change in your body. That’s why it’s important to track the pace of thinning and react if you notice other symptoms.
In the meantime, there are effective solutions for camouflaging thin brows! Here are 4 ways to fix them.
Eyebrow Makeup
We know, this one seems obvious. But it seems that the brow pencil is still the go-to makeup product for most, while there are several new and improved formulas on the market worth checking out.
The eyebrow mascara and the fiber gel give more natural results than the pencil, as they build up the actual hairs without creating a shadow of color underneath them. An innovative product like fiber eyebrow gel is an especially interesting option. Its formula contains tiny keratin fibers that both extend the natural hairs, and fill in any sparse patches.
Brow powders give a slightly more dramatic effect. Their main purpose is to add density, but achieving definition using a brow powder takes a bit of practice. Gels and pomades, on the other
hand, give excellent definition, but can’t provide density. Combined, however, they do wonders! Until they run and smudge, that is.
Microblading
If eyebrow makeup has become too much of a hassle, permanent makeup might be your life saver.
Microblading is a permanent makeup treatment that gives permanent, natural looking results and, as experts in microblading point out, it works even if you have no brow hairs at all. It is done by injecting natural pigments into the upper layer of the skin in thin, brow-like strokes in the shade of your natural hairs. The pigments stay in the skin for up to 2 years, at which point they fade.
The subtlety of the results makes microblading popular among men with thin eyebrows, too.
Eyebrow Tinting
If your problem isn’t actual fall-out, but rather a change in the thickness of individual hairs, eyebrow tinting could be the perfect solution.
With age, hair strings start getting thinner, and thus lighter. In every brow arch, there are numerous hairs so light or thin that they’re invisible which don’t contribute to the volume of the brow. Eyebrow tinting gives all these thin hairs color, instantly volumizing the arches.
One piece of advice: if you decide to try tinting, go to a salon! At-home DIY brow tinting kits often don’t work well enough and you’ll end up with patchy, uneven results. To make things worse, they often contain harsh chemicals that can damage the hairs and thin your brows further.
Growth Boost
If none of these camouflage techniques seem right, you could try stimulating hair growth. Keep in mind though, the effects are limited!
There are numerous serums and oils for lashes and brows on the market that claim to boost hair growth. However, the effectiveness of these often expensive products is questionable, and even if they do work, it takes months for the effects to kick in.
An economic way to boost growth is exfoliation. Exfoliation stimulates blood flow, which stimulates the follicles and could result in hair growth. You can use salt, sugar, or even an old toothbrush!
