Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside – CHANEL

Curtain bangs from the 70s, blush contour from the 80s, and blue eye shadows from the 90s – past beauty trends were easier to categorize on a decade basis. Such trends took years to fade away and thus newer trends emerged slower than the current rate. The rate of emergence of newer trends in the fashion industry has gone up dramatically. Every year has its defining beauty trends. The lightning speed by which social media works has led to the modern era where every day we get to witness new ways of styling our hair, makeup, nails, and even our complete wardrobe. The same goes for cosmetic procedures – as Botox becomes mega-popular year after year, lip augmentation, filler injections are gaining massive popularity since the big boom in 2015 – according to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Those are just two noninvasive options in an always-expanding world of plastic surgery.

With technology evolving at an exponential rate, the number of options available for cosmetic treatment has gone up like crazy. Among the various types of surgeries, four major types of cosmetic surgeries stand out, namely – breast implants, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and nose jobs.

Here’s an illustration from the report published by Medzino which paints a vivid picture of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world according to their popularity within different countries.

As one can deduce from the above report, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery worldwide. With the USA ranking the highest and closely followed by Brazil, this is indicative of the societal mindset in these nations. America is already known to the world for having a prevalent ideology that “bigger is better,” which is a huge contributor to the massive number of women opting for breast augmentation surgeries in the United States. Another factor can of course be the influence of Hollywood and the western glamour industry.

But we should keep in mind that not only the Americans are affected by the western standards of beauty – East Asian countries are also being heavily influenced by western culture and celebrities. The increasing westernization of the Asian culture explains why Japan is the foremost country with the most eyelid surgeries worldwide. Even surgeons in Japan know that their patients are inclined towards getting a wide-eye look which makes their features more ‘westernized.’

On the other hand, China has emerged as the world center for liposuction surgeries, with the highest number of liposuction surgeries performed per capita in the world. The relatively lower cost of such procedures in China than other western countries can be a probable explanation for this explosion.
